Free Speech on Campuses

While I dislike Ann Coulter, I dislike what universities seem to be doing (as pointed out in this article) even more:

It pays to not panic

Why a strong community and a great education are such important milestones for adolescence and ... emerging adulthood development.

Parenting 101

I have a great fondness and appreciation for those families who have let me work with their child(ren) and respected the boundary of the process.

Univ of Scranton

Probably the least well known of the Jesuit universities (think: Georgetown, the 4 Loyolas, Santa Clara Univ, St. Louis Univ, etc...), the Univ of Scranton is growing quickly. Sadly, it seems to be the only aspect of a very tired city, Scranton, PA, which is on the upswing. The Jesuits educate well, and they invest wisely in their campuses, but I'm not sure if this school can overcome its city, at least for students who might be applying from outside of PA and even, outside the U.S.
Cheers,
Brady

Anything at this point is just a reaction and will not save the system from the cannibalism of its taxpayers.
I'm so sorry for the students.

Convincing Argument for Partying

Something many may have thought or said, but perhaps this is the first time someone with any authority or research has brought it up as an academic issue or, dare I say, student well-being:

U Richmond

Although Virginia is home to a lot of amazing institutions, any of the others would be hard-pressed to top this one, in my book. The experience here has been more than outstanding. It's a moment when I consider going back to college for another graduate degree ...

Why do we go out of state?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevensalzberg/2012/04/22/university-of-florida-eliminates-computer-science-department-increases-athletic-budgets-hmm/

This is it! Never to UF will one of my students go again. They're clearly too thoughtless ... or corrupt. Or, perhaps, both.

About time

But there will always be ways for people to cheat the system. Submitting a picture as a part of the test registration process, which will then be matched to a picture on exam day should not serve as the most challenging obstacle.

Ahh

First, a poli sci class on the grass and then a walk through the woods on campus. All in a day's work at NC State University in Raleigh, N.C.
Makes us realize the stark contrasts in the type of campus environments available for high school seniors. But how could one judge that they just would not be happy at a univ such as this? Consider everyone of these students just as fortunate as those who may find themselves at NYU or Boston University. Totally different journeys to a very similar destination.

California ... poor, poor California

On Monday, the California State University (CSU) system announced that it would shut the door to admissions for Spring 2013 enrollment.

Yesterday, the CSU Board of Trustees approved 10 percent pay hikes for two campus presidents, following grim budget projections which called for students to endure more budget cuts. It's a funny world.

Continuing a very bad trend:

latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/03/cal-state-plans-to-freeze-enrollment-next-spring-at-most-campuses.html

What can students do? How can we let current high school students know that the opportunities for them are just not available? There is already such little support in the high schools and in their lives, period.
Without open universities, funded through the states, we are setting up a very clear path for future disaster, it seems to me.

Good afternoon, Brown U.

Students here don't let anything slow them down, it seems. What optimistic, busy (but friendly and helpful) people. After speaking with so many students, there don't seem to be any who regret their decision to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. Carry on, Brown. Thank you.

Special Place

Perhaps people have heard more about her parent campus, Columbia, but Barnard is certainly not short on anything (except, perhaps, men). The College prepares women thinkers and leaders who go on to become exceptional women. It's really an amazing living and learning environment. Look it up.

RSA Animate

Is this what's creating the "stress" that teenagers are running around talking about?
Are we living in a world with so much choice that it's absolutely paralyzing and, thus, limiting our desire to initiate social change?

Sort of a first

Usually it's the big-name schools that begin trends like this. Although many of them are pledging more financial aid each year- in order to recruit a more diverse student body- none of the Top-50 universities are doing anything like these few schools:

UNC Asheville

The liberal arts university of the UNC system. Why go to the Vatican when they have a near-exact replica of Raphael's The School of Athens, here at the University? It's a collaboration of over 50 student, faculty and local artists, created with more than 15000 hours of effort, spanning 2.5 years. Aside from this, the University seems to be an amazing place to live and learn.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Maybe it's just because the weather is perfect, but this University is really amazing. At only 80 years old, it's considered the younger sister to Chapel Hill and on camus you can see/hear/feel why. On the tour, students were also enthusiastic to point out that UNCC was just named the #17 party school. That's a pretty impressive statistic for a school that's only become residential in past 10 years.

at the end of the day, the services provided by some of these schools are above and beyond anything we can quantify:
